The High Tatras mountain range, located in NE Slovakia, on the
border with Poland, are the smallest alpine mountain range in
Europe. The mountain area has been designated as a National Park.
The High Tatras offer some of the best opportunities for hiking,
alpine & cross country skiing in Eastern Europe and, though
it can get very crowded at peak times, the area is much less
touristy than Zakopane, the main resort on the Polish side of
the Tatras.
Stary Smokovec, the central
resort, has a Swiss Alpine village atmosphere. The best hiking
area is accessible from here. |
